The US today determined preliminary countervailing duties (CVDs) on rebar producers in Algeria, Egypt and Vietnam, three of the largest suppliers of imported rebar prior to the March 2025 tariffs.

The US Department of Commerce and the International Trade Administration (ITA) in June 2025 initiated countervailing and antidumping investigations into rebar from Algeria, Bulgaria, Egypt and Vietnam using a review period of full-year 2024. The US in March 2025 had imposed 25pc global steel import tariffs, which were then doubled to 50pc in June.

Commerce in the Federal Register today published a 1.08pc rate for all Vietnamese steelmakers, a 29.51pc rate for all Egyptian steelmakers and a 72.94pc rate on all Algerian producers.

Egypt was the largest source of imported US rebar in full-year 2024, while Bulgaria and Algeria were third and fourth, respectively, according to the ITA's steel import tracker. Algeria and Egypt were the top two sources of imported rebar in full-year 2023.

US rebar producers this week published $30/short ton price increases, buoyed largely by the absence of imported volumes.
