Duisburg sulphur remelter reaches milestone

European sulphur and sulphuric acid marketer and distributor Aglobis, part of Japan's Mitsui, announced on 21 January the successful completion of the extended basic engineering phase for its 400,000 t/yr capacity sulphur remelter project in Duisburg, Germany, in December 2025.

Aglobis also highlights other milestones reached for the project — securing the utilities including power, gas and water, as well as completion of geotechnical surveys and soil analyses.

The release also outlines the conclusion of the basic plant design, setting in stone the overall layout including the three modal logistic design for product movements via barge, rail and truck.

Aglobis previously announced in January 2025 an early work agreement with Engie Deutschland for energy provision for its planned remelter.

This was followed by a subsequent release of the signing of an extended basic agreement with engineering service provider ECM in early April.

Mosaic extends SSP production halt in Brazil

London, 21 January (Argus) — US fertilizer producer and exporter Mosaic has suspended its SSP production in Brazil for a further 30 days, the firm said today. Mosaic idled its Fospar, southern Parana state, and Araxa, southeast Minas Gerais state, facilities on 16 December , pinning the decision on a sharp increase in sulphur prices. It said at the time that it could review the decision after 30 days. It has decided to keep the plants off line but "will continue to assess market conditions in the coming weeks", it said. Mosaic does not intend to buy sulphur in Brazil in the near term because of the extended production cuts, it said. Prices for sulphur delivered to Brazilian ports have risen to $540-550/t cfr from $510-515/t cfr at the beginning of December. Ammonia Europe opposes tariff removal, CBAM weakening

London, 21 January (Argus) — Industry body Ammonia Europe has denounced the European Commission's proposal to remove most-favoured nation (MFN) import tariffs on ammonia to mitigate the impact of the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) on fertilizers. The EU announced plans to suspend standard import tariffs on ammonia and urea following a meeting of EU agriculture ministers on 7 January, with extensions to other fertilizer products not ruled out. At the same time, the commission's reference to Article 27a created a backlash of confusion around whether CBAM could be suspended for fertilizers. In reality, Article 27a could allow for a temporary and retroactive suspension of CBAM in cases where it has caused "severe harm to the union internal market due to serious and unforeseen circumstances related to the impact on the prices of goods". The clause was included within CBAM amendment proposals issued last month but still needs to be formally approved by both the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. Ammonia Europe is calling on policy makers to "reject short-term fixes which fail to address the root causes of Europe's competitiveness crisis". The industry body highlighted that solutions need to address Europe's energy cost crisis and ensure effective carbon leakage protection. In its 7 January statement, the commission highlighted that fertilizer prices remain 60pc above their 2020 average. But this figure fails to recognise that feedstock natural gas prices have not returned to 2020 levels. European benchmark gas prices averaged $3.20/mn Btu on the front month contract in 2020. The same contract was assessed at $12.50/mn Btu on 19 January. "Removing MFN tariffs does nothing to address this structural issue but rewards imports produced with cheaper energy and greater carbon intensity, ultimately further weakening the EU's industrial base," the statement said. Ammonia is not limited to use in fertilizers. Applications also include pharmaceuticals, plastics, resins, glues, explosives and novel uses within the energy transition, which are all caused further injury by the tariff removal, the industry body said. The commission in July named ammonia as one of a few "critical" chemicals to the EU economy, which require additional support under its own Critical Chemicals Alliance. But removing import tariffs undermines efforts to address capacity closure risks in the chemical sector, and to ensure fair competition with non-EU producers who do not face equivalent carbon costs to those paid by European producers under the EU's emission trading scheme. "MFN tariffs have nothing to do with CBAM. It would be completely wrong to remove them," Ammonia Europe chief executive Stephen Jackson told Argus . India urea stocks under further pressure in January

Amsterdam, 21 January (Argus) — India's urea inventories stood at around 4.9mn t in mid-January, down from 5.3mn t at the end of December, with provisional data indicating strong sales this month. Urea sales are set to be around 4.4mn t in January, the provisional data indicate, which would be lower than the 4.56mn t sold in the month last year but still remain considerable compared with previous years. Production is set to be steady at over 2.6mn t this month. There was a stock drawdown of 2.24mn t in December after record local urea sales for any month at 5.76mn t. The falling stocks are maintaining pressure on imports, with market participants anticipating another buy-tender next month to top-up inventories ahead of the kharif summer season, which picks up in earnest in May-June. Swedish SOP producer Cinis files for bankruptcy

London, 20 January (Argus) — Swedish water-soluble potassium sulphate (SOP) producer Cinis today filed for bankruptcy after months of financial and production-related problems. Cinis was unable to find a lender willing to provide short-term credit after it announced on 9 January that it was in a "strained financial situation". An administrator will now determine the future of the firm, including a potential takeover. "The board has evaluated various courses of action and worked intensively to find a solution, but unfortunately, we have had the time against us and no agreement has been reached", company chairman Roger Johansson said. Cinis, which produced SOP from pulp-and-paper and car battery industries, began output at its 100,000 t/yr Ornskoldsvik plant in Sweden in May 2024 . It later delivered a first vessel of product to Dutch speciality fertilizer company Van Iperen in September that year. But Cinis has faced persistent challenges since then, including missing production goals . The company in April last year sought finance to boost production and for plant improvements. It then in October ditched its output targets and asked for further funding, before pausing production in November. BHP's Jansen potash project faces higher costs

Sydney, 20 January (Argus) — Australian mining firm BHP has completed 75pc of its 4.15mn t/yr Jansen stage 1 MOP project in Canada's Saskatchewan, but costs for the project's stage 1 have increased by $1bn-1.4bn, the firm said today. The Jansen stage 1 costs have reached $8.4bn, a 14pc increase from the latest estimate provided in July 2025, partly because of inflation and scope changes. The project's first phase is set to reach first production in mid-2027. The total investment for Jansen stage 1 was $5.7bn in August 2021 , when the project was approved, before increasing to $7bn-7.4bn in July 2025 . The most recent cost increase is because of construction hours and material quantities that were not included in previous cost estimates, BHP said. Jansen stage 2 is 14pc complete. The company expects first production from that stage before 30 June 2031. Production from the second stage will be around 4.36mn t/yr, sending the project's total capacity to 8.51mn t/yr. The project has the potential to reach a capacity of 16-17mn t/yr through two further expansions, BHP said. BHP expects to provide an updated investment estimate for Jansen stage 2 before the end of BHP's financial year on 30 June 2026.
