Danish firm Lithium Harvest plans to produce up to 28,500 metric tonnes/yr of battery-grade lithium carbonate from geothermal brine in Alberta, with first output targeted for 2028.

The company has signed a letter of intent with an unnamed geothermal developer to form a joint venture for an integrated power and lithium plant.

The project will be developed in two phases, with both power and lithium carbonate production expected to begin in 2028, although the company has not disclosed full capacity and capital costs.

The geothermal resource will provide both electricity and brine for lithium extraction, but the company did not give details such as site location, brine lithium grades and reservoir temperatures. The resource heat will generate up to 0.67TWh/yr of baseload electricity, according to the company.

Next steps include technical validation, engineering, permitting and securing finance.
