US March coal exports hit high mark since at least 1973

Washington, 2 May (Argus) — A surge in coking and thermal coal volumes sent March US coal exports to the highest level in at least 40 years.

Seaborne shipments grew by 23pc from March 2012 to 13.6mn short tons (12.4mn metric tonnes), according to US Census data released today. The total is the highest month for the US, according to Energy Information Administration data that go back to 1973.

The March 2013 figure surpasses the record US exports had set in June 2012 of 12.8mn st, which had bested a mark reached just two months earlier. Before April 2012, the all-time high for US exports was October 1981's 12.4mn st.

Exports in March also were 58pc higher than February's 8.6mn st.

Sub-bituminous coal shipments surged by 55pc on the year to 1.16mn st, coking coal exports rose 21pc to 7.35mn st, and other thermal coal rose 21pc to 5.12mn st.

Shipments to Asia increased more than any other continent, rising by 53pc to 5.21mn st from a year prior, driven by a 70pc increase in coking coal volumes to 3.69mn st.

Exports to Europe rose by 5pc to 6.06mn st, with a 20pc gain in thermal volumes to 3.68mn st offsetting a 12pc decline in coking coal to 2.38mn st.

China, expected to surpass Japan as the largest coking coal importer in the world this year, was the single-biggest destination for US coking coal at 1.27mn st of imports, a 74pc gain on the year. Brazil followed at 881,076st, up 21pc on the year. Coking coal shipments to the Netherlands fell by 12pc to 681,373st, while Japan's imports rose 59pc to 640,217st.
