BG confirms NLNG force majeure lifted

London, 26 July (Argus) — The force majeure at Nigeria LNG's 22mn t/yr export facility on Bonny island has been lifted, the UK's BG Group chief executive Chris Finlayson said today.

The force majeure was put in place on 28 June following a blockade by the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (Nimasa) in a dispute over export levies. The blockade stopped LNG tankers from loading at Bonny over 22 June-12 July.

The company, which has a term deal with the facility, has since exported two LNG cargoes from Bonny in July, according to interim financial officer Den Jones. The most recent one was loaded on 20 July. BG is confident that there will be no further disruptions to operations at Nigeria for the rest of this year, Finlayson said.

The Nigeria LNG blockade last month resulted in the loss of roughly 20 LNG shipments and estimated revenue losses of around $475mn. The blockade was finally lifted after NLNG reluctantly agreed to pay Nimasa $140mn in levies.

Over a dozen tankers were waiting offshore Bonny following the blockade that prevented vessels loading LNG for around three weeks. The backlog is likely to take weeks to clear.

Several cargoes may have already been cancelled based on the exemptions provided by a force majeure, and buyers were concerned that more could have been cancelled if the force majeure had remained in place.
