Washington, 28 August (Argus) — The US Army Corp of Engineers has awarded contracts for solar power projects to 22 companies as part of a $7bn effort to increase its use of renewable energy.

The Multiple Award Task Order Contracts (MATOC) will be used to procure “reliable, locally generated, renewable and alternative energy” for Defense Department installations through power purchase agreements. They will help the army meet its goal of obtaining 25pc of its energy from renewables by 2025.

“Awarding these contracts for solar technology is an important milestone in the process of awarding contracts for the four technologies selected to help the army meet renewable energy goals,” said colonel Robert Ruch, commander of the US Army Engineering and Support Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The batch of contracts is the second issued under a $7bn MATOC program that covers four types of renewable energy production. The army issued contracts to five geothermal developers in May. The remaining technologies, wind and biomass, will be awarded contracts by the end of 2013, the army corps said.

Among the companies to win solar power contracts are: Acciona Energy, Borrego Solar, Dominion Energy, Element Power, Enel Green Power, NRG Energy, Siemens and Sunpower.
