Germany pledges support for NordLink cable

Germany today pushed for a timely investment decision for the 1.4GW NordLink power cable — the first interconnector between Germany and Norway.

Germany’s economy and energy minister Sigmar Gabriel met with Norway’s minister of petroleum and energy Tord Lien today to discuss the country’s energy policies, including the planned NordLink cable.

Gabriel said the project continues to have the “full support” of the German government. German grid regulator Bnetza's approval of the German investment is imminent and all the necessary permits should be granted by summer, he said.

“Now it is crucial that the Norwegian ministry also grants the licences to [Norwegian transmission system operator] Stattnet by the summer, so that we can move forward with this project which is important for both of our countries”, Gabriel said.

Tennet, one of Germany's four TSOs, and the state government of Schleswig-Holstein agreed in January to complete the permitting procedure for NordLink in June this year. The final investment decision (FID) on NordLink is planned for the end of this year, and the project partners want to start construction of the line in 2015, with a start-up in 2018.

Tennet, Stattnet and German state-owned bank KfW agreed in 2012 to jointly build an interconnector with up to 1.4GW capacity between Germany and Norway. Statnett holds 50pc in the NordLink consortium, with Tennet and KfW each holding 25pc through their holdings in project company Noka.

NordLink aims to foster integration between the two power markets and, more broadly, the central west European and Nordic market areas.

Germany is keen to tap into Norway's reservoirs to store its excess renewable production and call on imports at times when there is little or no wind and solar power.

Gabriel and Lien also discussed the role of Norwegian natural gas for Germany, with Gabriel saying that it is vital for security of supply in Germany. “Norway is and will continue to be a reliable energy partner for Germany”, he said.
