BMA adds to Australian coking coal job cuts

Australian coking coal joint-venture firm BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) will cut 700 jobs from its Queensland operations to cut costs and improve their long-term viability.

The Australian coking coal industry is experiencing a difficult transition and BMA must reset its cost base to stay globally competitive, BMA asset president Lucas Dow said today amid plans to make 7pc of the company's workforce redundant during the next few weeks.

Hard coking coal prices have settled at around $110-$115/t fob Australia for the past six months, falling from a peak of $330/t in early 2011.

The cuts will have no impact on production or export targets, according to BMA partner UK-Australian mining BHP Billiton. The company will continue to push for improved productivity that could lead to further increases in sales.

BMA operates seven coking coal mines in Queensland, as well as the Hay Point coal export terminal near Mackay.

Unionised workers in 2012 significantly disrupted production at BMA during a dispute over pay. The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union is currently reviewing its options amid what it terms as BMA's disregard for the jobs of its members.

BHP last week said it would cut 500 jobs from its iron ore operations, having in July cut 163 jobs from its Mount Arthur coal mine in New South Wales.
