Australian producer Whitehaven Coal expects to transport the first output from its 13mn t/yr Maules Creek project in January next year, more than two months ahead of schedule and on budget.

Maules Creek will produce high-quality, low-ash, low-sulphur and low-phosphorus semi-soft coking coal and low-ash, low-sulphur, high-energy thermal coal. The operations are located 360km southeast of Newcastle port.

The project's partners include Whitehaven with 75pc and Japanese firms Itochu and J-Power with 15pc and 10pc respectively. The mine has a potential project life of more than 30 years. It will more than double Whitehaven's output from the 10.84mn t of saleable coal it produced in the 2013-14 fiscal year, of which 1.99mn t was coking coal with the remainder thermal.

The new supplies from Maules Creek come at a time when thermal coal markets are facing oversupply, while semi-soft and coking coal producers in Australia have cut back production because they were incurring losses at current prices.
