South Korean upstream firm SK E&S has signed a joint development agreement with US petrochemical firm Honeywell UOP to build a carbon capture demonstration facility at a LNG power plant.

The firms will use Honeywell UOP's Advanced Solvent Carbon Capture system at a SK E&S LNG power plant, which can capture over 95pc of CO2 emitted, according to Honeywell on 26 September. The system can be retrofitted within existing plants or be included as part of a new installation.

The two companies will start initial engineering to build the plant and discuss ways to commercialise the jointly-developed carbon capture technology. SK E&S will oversee the engineering, purchasing and construction. The demonstration facility is set to start construction next year and begin operating in 2026-27, according to a SK E&S official on 4 October.

SK is deciding among three gas power plants with capacities of 1GW or more for the facility, and is prioritising plants that are near Seoul — referring to the 1.8GW Paju plant and the 1GW Yeoju plant, a Honeywell official said on 5 October, citing SK.

The Paju plant started commercial operations in 2017, and Thai private-sector electricity generator Egco acquired a 49pc stake in it in 2018. The plant is fuelled partly by regasified LNG imported directly from the US Gulf coast, bypassing South Korean natural-gas monopoly Kogas and cutting SK E&S' fuel costs. The Yeoju plant was scheduled to start commercial operations in August, according to SK E&S' website.

But other details such as the plant capacity and amount of CO2 emission captured are still under review, with it being difficult to determine certain details at this juncture as the agreement is still at an early stage, the SK E&S official added.

SK E&S described this as the first time a private-sector firm is building its own dedicated facilities to demonstrate carbon capture for LNG power generation, adding that it is applying carbon capture and storage for the first time in South Korea.
