Japan’s Jera to support LNG adoption in Philippines

Japanese power producer Jera has signed an agreement with Japan's Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships to support LNG adoption in the Philippines.

The agreement was signed on 22 December and includes Jera supporting the Philippines in drafting regulations related to LNG storage and regasification terminals, gas shipping systems, and the construction and management of facilities. The company will also be involved in drafting national standards related to LNG and natural gas in the Philippines.

Jera will also assess natural gas demand, study the feasibility of power generation plants and boilers at Batangas city in the southern part of Luzon, and conduct a lifecycle assessment of the environmental impact of adopting LNG. Jera will also share LNG and natural gas-related knowledge with Filipino stakeholders.

Detailed schedules have not yet been decided. Jera may consider trading LNG with the Philippines in the future, but this is not included in this project.

The Philippines expects its primary gas field Malampaya to be depleted by 2024. This has urged the country to seek alternative gas supply to cover growing electricity demand, reduce its reliance on coal-fired power generation and mitigate the impact from renewable power volatility. The Philippines recently started to import LNG, with Filipino utility First Gen receiving its first cargo from Shell Eastern Trading.
