H2 tech immaturity was unforeseen: Everfuel

Danish company Everfuel found after going public that hydrogen technology across the value chain was "not as mature as expected," chief executive Jacob Krogsgaard said today.

When the company publicly listed in 2020, there was a consensus among the interested players that hydrogen technology was mature enough to scale and that capital markets were ready, although there were no political frameworks in place, Krogsgaard said Tuesday on the company's earnings call.

As of 2024, Everfuel and other companies that have made firm investments were met with the unwelcome surprise that hydrogen technology, from electrolyzers to fueling stations, was not ready for mass deployment, Krogsgaard said. Projects have become more complex in recent years — but new political tailwinds have eased doubt about hydrogen's place in the energy transition, he added.

Everfuel recently delayed the startup of its 20MW HySynergy electrolyzer in Denmark after a failed test in late February. Costs doubled for the project, now two years behind schedule, last summer to €45mn ($49mn), up from the initial budget of €20mn.

But Krogsgaard saw this as typical for the industry, saying today it would be hard to find "a hydrogen project that has not seen significant budget overruns."

Krogsgaard provided new details on the closure of Everfuel's hydrogen fueling stations, which the firm announced last summer, saying it would switch its focus to heavy-duty vehicles.

There were too few vehicles on the roads, and the complexity of the stations and their unreliability made them more expensive to operate than Everfuel had anticipated, Krogsgaard said. In addition to the heavy-duty market, Everfuel is laying the groundwork for a future hydrogen-powered taxi market by leaving its Copenhagen station installed, to be restarted for new customers in the future.

Everfuel's loss in 2023 widened to €27mn from a loss of €16mn in 2022.
