Western Australia's (WA) mining regulator has approved mining firm Fenix Resources' Beebyn-W11 iron ore mine proposal, enabling the company to move towards its scheduled September-December opening date.

The company is still waiting for approval to start work on its Beebyn haulage road, which will connect the new mine to the port of Geraldton. Fenix expects to start building the road by March.

Beebyn W-11 is scheduled to operate until at least 2033, with a capacity of 1.2mn t/yr, the company said on 28 February. Fenix has indicated that it may apply to further extend the mine's life, given the quality and size of its deposit.

Fenix expects the Beebyn W-11 mine to boost its annual ore production rate from 2.5mn t to 4mn t over 2025.

The company expects the operating cost of the mine to hover at around $48.20/wmt. In comparison, Fortescue's hematite costs were just $19.17/wmt over July-December 2024.

Argus' iron ore fines 62pc Fe (ICX) cfr Qingdao price was last assessed at $105.30/t on 27 February, up from $101.10/t six months earlier, but down from $118.90/t a year earlier. The iron ore price fell over the first half of 2024, bottoming out at $88.7/t on 23 September 2024, before starting to recover.
