Japan’s scrap export tender rises in August

The monthly export tender held by Japanese scrap dealer co-operative Kanto Tetsugen increased slightly in August because of renewed demand from Vietnam.

A total of 20,000t of H2 scrap was awarded at ¥41,888/t ($284.17/t) fas, up by ¥172/t from July. This translates to ¥42,888/t fob, or $291.10/t. The result was in line with prevailing market levels, suggesting limited impact on the broader seaborne market.

The dollar-equivalent price was largely unchanged from last month, as the yen — despite sharp fluctuations in recent weeks — stood at a similar rate against the US dollar compared with the July tender.

Bangladeshi mills had secured Kanto tender cargoes for the past three months, but this month's lot is expected to go to Vietnam. Market participants estimated the price at around $320/t cfr Vietnam. It was about $5/t above the market level earlier this week, reflecting the usual quality premium for tender cargoes.

Many Japanese traders expect Vietnamese demand to gradually bottom out. Mills in Vietnam remained cautious in July, citing weak August steel sales and uncertainty in the Chinese market, but the mills are expected to resume restocking to prepare for higher demand after the monsoon season ends.

The Argus H2 fob Japan assessment was at ¥42,000/t on 7 August, while the July monthly average at ¥41,030/t fob.
