US LNG developer Glenfarne has unveiled a $500mn commitment from BlackRock-backed HPS Investment Partners as the firm steps closer to a final investment decision on its proposed 4mn t/yr (530mn ft³/d) Texas LNG export terminal.

Glenfarne said on Monday that the investment supports the development and early construction works at the terminal at the south Texas port of Brownsville. The backing comes after Glenfarne issued a limited notice to proceed on 3 July to Kiewit, the project's engineering, procurement and construction contractor. That notice covers procurement for long-lead equipment, engineering activities and geotechnical work.

Glenfarne missed its target to decide on Texas LNG by the end of June. The proposed terminal has allotted 3.5mn t/yr of its capacity, with 1mn t/yr to German utility RWE, 500,000 t/yr each to US gas producer EQT and traders Gunvor and Macquarie and 1mn t/yr to trading firm BGN. Only BGN's supply has not yet been finalized.

Texas LNG expects to begin commercial operations in 2031.
