Houston, 11 June (Argus) — Agrium is resuming operations at its Conda, Idaho, phosphate production facility after entering a planned turnaround that began 1 June. As of 9 June, the ore beneficiation unit and phosphoric acid unit were back up and operating as scheduled.
The sulphur-based sulphuric acid plant will remain down until around 15 June for ongoing maintenance as planned. Production of MAP will “commence shortly” according to the company. Annual MAP production capacity at Conda is 510,000t.
In addition to sulphuric acid produced on site, Agrium also sources smelter acid from Kennecott Utah Copper, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, to support its phosphate production. The Bingham copper mine in Utah that serves as feedstock for the smelter suffered a slide on 10 April leading to market speculation on how the outage would affect sulphuric acid supply to Agrium and Kennecott's other customers.
However, Kennecott has been producing sulphuric acid through the use of stockpiled ore, newly mined ore and the use of third-party concentrates. Some spot sulphuric acid purchases of domestically produced product as a result of the slide and expected lack of production were concluded initially, but in recent weeks customers have been covered through increased output from the smelter.
