UK ferrous scrap exports to Egypt surge
UK exports of deep-sea ferrous scrap bulk cargoes to Egypt have risen sharply this year, with the country becoming the main destination for large scrap shipments in August.
The UK exported an estimated 1.03mn t of ferrous scrap to Egypt via deep-sea shipment in January-August, an increase of 45.5pc on the year and already in excess of the estimated 975,000t exported in the whole of 2020, vessel tracking data collected by Argus indicate.
An estimated 190,000t of deep-sea scrap was dispatched to Egypt in August, 59pc of all large UK bulk shipments for the month. Egypt accounted for 29.7pc of all deep-sea exports tracked in January-August, up from 27.6pc in the same period last year.
One of the main drivers for the increase in UK exports to Egypt is a diversification in the number of UK suppliers and locations that are selling to the country. Egypt has long been the second-largest UK deep-sea export destination after Turkey, but sales were previously dominated by two exporters selling primarily out of Liverpool and Southampton.
This year, deep-sea scrap cargoes have been dispatched to Egypt by at least four exporters, with multiple shipments from Avonmouth, Immingham, Sheerness, Tilbury and Hull, in addition to the existing mainstay ports.
The rise in deep-sea exports to Egypt has been accompanied by a slowdown in shipments to Turkey, with a drop of 4.5pc on the year to 1.58mn t in January-August.
In August, an estimated 50,000t was shipped to Turkey, the lowest monthly total since May 2020, when all UK exports were frozen for most of the month because of disruption caused by the first wave of Covid-19.
Overall, UK deep-sea exports in August fell by 32.8pc from July amid the traditional summer slowdown in shipping activity. But an estimated 330,000t was tracked to have been dispatched, which is still a 46.7pc increase on August 2020.
Turkey's share of tracked UK January-August deep-sea exports fell to 45.5pc in January-August, from 64.4pc in the whole of 2020.
This is reflected in the fact that estimated January-August deep-sea exports were up by 35.1pc on the year at 3.48mn t, despite the fall in shipments to Turkey.
Aside from increased trade with Egypt, the increase has also been driven by a significant uptick in exports to five other countries — Italy, Kuwait, the US, Vietnam and Bangladesh (see chart).
Italy emerged as a destination for UK deep-sea exports during the first wave of the pandemic in spring 2020, when collection activity was severely disrupted by lockdown restrictions.
The winter wave of Covid again significantly dented Italian scrap flows in the first half of this year, causing consumers to once more turn to the UK, where the scrap industry more effectively adapted to ramp up processing capability in lockdown conditions through the second half of 2020. No UK exports to Italy have been recorded since June, indicating that the window may have closed in the same manner as it did last year.
Increased UK exports to the US this year were primarily for prime grade scrap, driven by extremely tight availability and voracious appetite for high-quality material.
Bangladeshi buyers have returned to purchasing deep-sea UK cargoes after being virtually absent from this market in 2020. This has partially been driven by a sizeable fall in scrap exports to Bangladesh from Japan and the US.
Japan emerged as a major supplier to Bangladesh in 2020 but has become a much less attractive source for the country's steel mills because of persistently high prices for Japanese scrap this year. Japanese exports of ferrous scrap to Bangladesh fell by 31.7pc in January-July to 293,000t, according to official trade data.
The other driver for increased Bangladeshi purchases of larger deep-sea bulk cargoes has been the global tightness in availability of seaborne containerised scrap as a result of persistent container shortages in key exporting regions, particularly the US west coast.

Beijing, 24 April (Argus) — Chinese battery cathode producers have continued to expand investment in the overseas market, with the country's largest lithium iron phosphate (LFP) producer Hunan Yuneng planning to build a plant in Spain. Yuneng plans to invest 982mn yuan ($135.5mn) to build a 50,000 t/yr LFP production plant in Spain's Extremadura region. The firm aims to complete the site construction in 15 months after obtaining approval from the authorities. It will establish a subsidiary Yuneng International (Spain) New Energy Battery Material to develop this project. It did not disclose more details such as the launch dates. "This project is to strengthen the company's position in the global market and meet demand from overseas consumers, on the back of growing demand for LFP cathodes in the overseas market driven by the development of new energy vehicles outside China, especially in Europe," Yuneng said. Yuneng produced 504,400t of LFP cathodes in 2023, up by 50pc from a year earlier, with sales also rising by 56pc to 506,800t over the same period. It has achieved a nameplate capacity of 700,000 t/yr for LFP as of the end of 2023. It is also expanding capacity for another emerging battery cathode material, lithium manganese iron phosphate, which has higher energy density and allows for a longer driving range in electric vehicles (EVs), better performance in winter temperatures, and has lower manufacturing costs compared with LFP. Overseas expansions A growing number of Chinese battery cathode firms have accelerated their investment in overseas production projects, such as in France, Morocco and South Korea , to diversify resource origins and meet market entry conditions to the US required by the Inflation Reduction Act, and to cope with restrictions on key battery materials in the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act. Argus forecasts total demand for EV battery cathode material will reach 7.7mn t by 2034, from only 1mn t in 2022, with LFP expected to continue to take up the bigger share compared with ternary battery cathodes. Mexico City, 23 April (Argus) — Las inversiones en México en ensamblaje de vehículos eléctricos (EV) y cadenas de suministro alcanzaron un máximo histórico en 2023 y se espera que crezcan en 2024, a pesar de una reciente desaceleración de la demanda global de EV y las próximas elecciones presidenciales. Se realizaron 96 inversiones en México durante 2023 en vehículos eléctricos y gastos relacionados con la electromovilidad, que alcanzaron los $5,600 millones, según el último informe de electromovilidad de la empresa mexicana de investigación Directorio Automotriz (DA). La empresa espera que esto se expanda en 11pc a $6,200 millones en 2024. London, 22 April (Argus) — Norwegian aluminium producer Hydro has invested 240mn kroner ($21.8mn) in a new recycling facility alongside its primary aluminium smelter in Hoyanger, Norway. The recycling plant will process 36,000 t/yr of post-consumer aluminium scrap, as Hydro moves towards its 2030 target of reducing its emissions by 30pc compared with 2018 levels. The new facility will process scrap metal from vehicles, building facades, furniture, packaging and other consumer goods, which will be mixed with primary metal made with renewable hydropower at the Hoyanger plant. Among Hydro's low-carbon aluminium products is the Circal brand of aluminium, which is made with 75pc recycled content, and the Reduxa brand, which is made with renewable energy and generates emissions of less than 4kg CO2/kg aluminium produced. They are key to the company's emission reduction targets and ultimately reaching net zero by 2050. "Recycling is the fastest way to zero. With this new facility, we deliver on our strategy to increase recycling capacity in our efforts to decarbonise our own production processes and make products that the world needs for the green transition," the executive vice-president of Hydro's aluminium metal business, Eivind Kallevik, said. New York, 22 April (Argus) — A third temporary shipping channel has opened at the Port of Baltimore to allow more vessel traffic around the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. Located on the northeast side of the main channel, the new passage has a controlling depth of 20-ft, a 300-ft horizontal clearance, and a vertical clearance of 135-ft. When combined with two other temporary channels opened earlier this month the port should be able to handle "... approximately 15 percent of pre-collapse commercial activity," said David O'Connell, the federal on-scene coordinator. The main shipping channel of the Port of Baltimore — a key conduit for US vehicle imports and coal exports — is expected to be reopened by the end of May, the Maryland Port Administration said earlier this month. The bridge collapsed into the water late last month when the 116,851dwt container ship Dali lost power and crashed into one of its support columns. Salvage teams have been working ever since to remove debris from the water and containers from the ship in order to clear the main channel.
