Construction spending grew by 0.4pc to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.05 trillion in November, with private investment driving the growth, according to the latest data from the US Census Bureau.
Wholesale asphalt prices slipped in November on lower seasonal demand and falling production costs as drier than normal weather likely supported an increase in highway and street spending. The Argus fob New Jersey assessment averaged $417.50/st over November, down from October's average of $435/st and about 14pc above prices seen over the same time in 2022. WTI crude futures declined from $80.44/bl on 1 November to $74.86/bl on 27 November.
Roofing flux prices also weakened in November on the usual slowdown in demand despite the rise in total private construction spending. Argus roofing flux assessments on the US Gulf coast dropped to $507.50/st in November from $512.50/st in October and were about 13pc below prices from the same time last year.
Midwestern roofing flux prices declined to $450/st in November from $475/st in October and were roughly 4pc below prices seen a year prior. Some market participants expect stronger demand for roofing flux in late 2024 amid lower expected borrowing costs that should prompt more home construction in an undersupplied housing market.
