Deliveries on the Transcontinental Gas pipeline (Transco), the largest US natural gas system by volume, hit a record high thanks to a cold snap last week along the east coast and the completion of expansion projects.

Deliveries on the long-haul Transco line, which extends from Texas to New York City, reached 13.2 Bcf/d (375mn m³/d) on 8 January, surpassing the previous record set on 7 January 2015 of about 13 Bcf/d, pipeline operator Williams Partners said today.

In addition, the pipeline established a new three-day market delivery record on 7-9 January of 13.1 Bcf/d, topping the previous three-day high of 12.5 Bcf/d. The Transco zone 6 New York price for delivery on 7-9 January rose to $7.62/mmBtu, up by 45pc from the previous session and the highest since 14 December.

Williams Partners completed five expansions on the Transco system from 2015 to 2016, which lifted overall system capacity by 1.2 Bcf/d. Those projects have mostly targeted growing demand in the southeast and moving stranded Marcellus shale gas to market.
