French grid operator RTE could resort to exceptional measures to ensure power supply tomorrow, as weather forecasts point to temperatures well below seasonal norms.
These exceptional measures potentially include cutting off power supply to 21 power-intensive sites and reducing voltage by 5pc across distribution networks. RTE will confirm later today whether it will use these exceptional measures. Peak power demand could reach 94GW tomorrow, according to RTE's most recent forecasts.
Peak power demand could be even higher on 18 and 19 January and could near 100GW, but RTE does not anticipate scheduled black-outs. RTE revised its expectations for 19 January down from last week's forecasts, with a demand peak previously anticipated at 101.1GW.
Around 6.4GW of nuclear capacity will be unavailable tomorrow at 9:00 CET, putting overall nuclear availability at 89.8pc, compared with 92.9pc on 18 January 2016 when an annual consumption peak of 88.6GW was recorded.
Tight supply has been exacerbated by historical lows for hydro stocks. Reserves in the second week of January ending 15 January, totalled 1,506.1GWh or 41.9pc of domestic installed capacity — the lowest level for the second week of the year since records began in 1997.
