Hanwha Total cracker restart delayed by strike

A restart of South Korean producer Hanwha Total's Daesan-based cracker continues to be delayed by a workers' union strike.

South Korea's Hanwha Total labor union went on a general strike for a pay increase on 23 March after negotiations with management fell apart.

The petrochemical producer still went ahead with its plan to take its naphtha cracker and derivative styrene monomer (SM), ethylene glycol (MEG) and polypropylene (PP) units off line for scheduled routine maintenance over 27 March-6 May. The strike was not expected to affect operations as a minimum number of workers agreed to remain.

But the labor standoff continues and the 1.09mn t/yr cracker is unable to restart despite completing the turnaround. It is not immediately clear how long the shutdown will last.

Hanwha Total was able to restart a smaller No.1 SM production unit with a capacity of 400,000t/yr earlier this week, while its larger SM production line of 700,000 t/yr remains shut even though the routine maintenance has finished.

Operations at its 120,000 t/yr MEG unit are also affected by the continuing strike. The unit may be able to restart in the coming week.

One of Hanwha Total's two 350,000 t/yr PP units also restarted this week. The cracker has a propylene capacity of 600,000 t/yr.

Hanwha Total managed to secure up to at least 8,000t of ethylene from the domestic market to meet demand from its derivative units during the shutdown.

It is also selling 33,000t of feedstock light naphtha for loading over 20-22 May through a tender issued today.
