Turkish coal prices soften

  • Market: Coal
  • 09/04/20

Turkey-delivered coal prices eased further this week amid weak coal demand and further drops in Atlantic basin coal prices.

Prices for NAR 6,000 kcal/kg coal delivered to Turkey on vessels of at least 50,000t fell by 89¢/t on the week to $58.26/t cif Turkey supra plus.

Activity was muted in the market, as many cement plants have already adjusted their fuel needs for the coming months and coal-fired utilities are waiting for clarity on the country's power demand trajectory and availability of coal supply from Colombia.

One power utility was heard to have received offers of about $57/t fob Baltic for Panamax-sized vessels, but utilities are well stocked at the moment and a weak demand profile suggests spot interest might be limited, even if shipping schedules for April and May-loading cargoes from Colombia face delays.

Buyers and sellers might handle any possible shipping disruptions from Colombia on a case-by-case basis rather than Colombian sellers issuing force majeure, as mining activities are exempted from the national quarantine, some market participants said. Colombia's largest producer, Drummond, said it will increase mining operations from 10 April, but it will continue to operate at reduced capacity in the near-term. In the case of any major disruption, utilities are likely to look for coal supplies loaded from Russian ports in the Baltic or Black seas.

A steep fall in power demand and strong hydropower output started to weigh on Turkey's coal-fired output in April. Coal-fired generation eased to 3.2GW on 1-8 April, compared with 5.6GW during the same period last year.

Turkish power demand stood firm in March, despite the outbreak of Covid-19, with average output inching down by only 200MW on the year to 31.7GW. But power demand fell sharply in April, with output averaging 27.9GW on 1-8 April, 13pc lower than the average output of 31.9GW at the same time last year.

The country's hydropower generation also strengthened, gaining by 1.5GW on the year to 13.5GW.

Turkey's coal-fired output reaches its lowest level of the year in April-June, as most utilities schedule their annual maintenances during this peak-hydro period. Some utilities have started to carry out small-scale maintenances, but utilities will have to wait for global travel restrictions to ease before completing more critical tasks as they require supervision from foreign personnel in some key areas, one coal-fired utility said.

But coal-fired generation would be the main beneficiary of any recovery in power demand in the coming weeks, as coal remains ahead of gas in the merit order.

Elsewhere in the wider Mediterranean market, a tender that closed this week for five 40,000t cargoes — two for delivery in May, one in June and two in July — was heard to have been awarded at about $53/t cfr Beni Ansar by a Moroccan utility. This could not be confirmed with the counterparties.
