Spanish renewable developer Capital Energy aims to build around 11GW of wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the Iberian peninsula over the next five years, as part of plans to move into power generation and sales.

Wind would provide around 8GW, and solar PV 3GW, the company told Argus. All plants would be operational by the end of 2025, with total investments estimated at over €10bn ($11.3bn).

Construction of the first projects — two wind farms with combined capacity of 100MW — is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year in the Andalucia and Asturias regions.

The company has not yet signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for any of its projects, but has been in talks with interested offtakers.

"Our objective is to structure a diversified hedging mix with different timeframes, so that our portfolio will have part of the revenues from future auctions and part from PPAs, while another part will be sold directly on the wholesale market," Capital Energy told Argus.

Wholesale market risks would be mitigated through participation in the Iberian power futures market, as well as in the retail segment.

Capital Energy has more than 13GW of Iberian projects in the advanced development stage. Of this, 8.5GW comes from 160 wind projects and over 4.2GW from 50 solar PV projects in Spain. It also has two wind projects in Portugal with combined capacity of 97MW.

The company has secured connection rights for 6.2GW of these projects.
