Japanese trading house Itochu and subsidiary Itochu Enex are co-operating with Netherlands-based oil storage and terminal operator Vopak on potentially developing supply infrastructure to use ammonia as a marine fuel for vessels in Singapore.

Itochu, its energy trading arm Itochu Enex and Vopak have agreed to jointly study the feasibility of developing a supply chain of ammonia as a marine fuel in Singapore. Vopak is planning to support the Japanese firms in the study aimed to develop an independent, onshore facility by making use of its expertise in storage and handling of ammonia at the Banyan terminal in Singapore.

Itochu Enex is targeting to study an ammonia fuel supply chain in Singapore. Itochu will examine the possibility of developing offshore facilities for the project, such as a floating storage tank and an ammonia fuel supply vessel in co-operation with Itochu Enex and other Singapore firms.

Itochu and Itochu Enex are involved in a project in Japan to develop ammonia supply infrastructure and launch ammonia-fuelled commercial vessels. A cross-industry consortium of Japanese firms have launched the joint project to provide the shipping industry with an alternative marine fuel to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
