Japanese auto producer Toyota and electronics firm Panasonic's joint venture Prime Planet Energy and Solutions (PPES) plans to set up a new production line for lithium-ion batteries supplying hybrid vehicles.

PPES will build the new line at Panasonic's factory in Tokushima prefecture on Japan's southern Shikoku island. The joint venture targets to begin production at the site from 2022 and plans to supply lithium-ion batteries for around 500,000 hybrid vehicles each year. PPES did not disclose the planned investment.

Toyota and Panasonic own 51pc and 49pc respectively of PPES. They established it in April this year to meet growing next generation vehicle demand amid stricter environmental regulations.

Japan during January-August imported 34,118t of lithium in total, including lithium carbonates, lithium hydroxides and lithium metals, data from the finance ministry show, down by 18.2pc from a year earlier.
