Danish Tyra gas redevelopment pushed back to 2Q23

The completion of the redevelopment of Denmark's Tyra gas complex has been pushed back to the second quarter of 2023 from mid-2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

First production from the Tyra redevelopment project is now expected in the second quarter of 2023 instead of 2022 as previously planned, Norwegian independent Noreco said today. The project is still set to be delivered within budget. Noreco — which has a 36.8pc stake in North Sea joint venture the Danish Underground Consortium (Duc) and a 41.1pc interest in the Tyra West pipeline — still expected a start-up date in mid-2022 in May.

Local governments implemented restrictions at fabrication yards because of the Covid-19 pandemic, affecting the schedule for the new Tyra topsides, including through the global supply chain, Noreco said. As a result, the installation of four new topsides has been rescheduled to 2022 from 2021.

Tyra is the largest gas field in the Danish sector of the North Sea, and processes over 90pc of Danish domestic production (see chart).

Since the Tyra complex halted in September 2019, Denmark and Sweden have been reliant on imports from Germany and storage withdrawals to meet their demand. Danish imports at Ellund were 76.6 GWh/d on 1 October-5 November, slightly lower than a year earlier but reversed from flows in the opposite direction over the period in 2018.

The delay to the completion of the Tyra redevelopment will mean that Denmark and Sweden rely on German imports for longer. But Danish system operator Energinet still foresees "robust" security of supply while the complex is off line. And the 10bn m³/yr Baltic Pipe — which will carry Norwegian gas to Denmark and Poland — is scheduled to be commissioned in October 2022.

Denmark has a working storage capacity of just under 10.5TWh, which when filled can meet around a quarter of the annual consumption of Denmark and Sweden. Stocks were at 98.5pc of capacity yesterday morning.

And Energinet expects Danish gas demand to fall steadily in the coming years, as renewables displace gas in generation mix and biogas production rises.
