Bahrain lifts airspace ban on Qatar-registered aircraft

Bahrain has lifted a ban on Qatar-registered aircraft using its airspace, following similar moves by Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It should provide some support to air travel and jet fuel demand in the region, which have been significantly hit by restrictions imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Bahrain's Civil Aviation Affairs department said relevant notices regarding Qatar-registered aircraft had been amended as of today. It comes after a deal was signed by the six-nation Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) at its summit last week, paving the way for the full restoration of diplomatic and commercial ties. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and non-GCC member Egypt imposed an economic and diplomatic blockade on Qatar in June 2017 on the grounds that it was too close to Iran and was sponsoring terrorism and fostering instability — allegations Qatar strongly denies.

The dispute resulted in the four counties closing their respective airspaces to all flights landing in and taking off from Qatar, and more widely to all Qatar-registered planes. This resulted in the suspension of direct flights between these countries for more than three years, including those operated by state-owned Qatar Airways, which launched international arbitration proceedings last year seeking at least $5bn in compensation.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE announced plans to reopen their air, land and sea entry points to Qatar last week. Qatar Airways said it will restore operations to three of Saudi Arabia's main cities — Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam — from 11, 14 and 16 January, respectively.

The reopening of borders should support regional air travel and jet fuel demand. Prior to the blockade, Qatar's jet fuel demand was rising by about 20pc/yr as it grew as a major transit hub and tourist destination. But the fallout from the diplomatic rift saw Qatari jet fuel demand drop by 13pc on the year to 87,000 b/d in 2018, according to the Joint Organisations Data Initiative (Jodi). There are no data available for 2019.
