Flex LNG receives newbuild Flex Volunteer carrier

  • Market: Natural gas
  • 20/01/21

Norwegian shipowner Flex LNG took delivery of the 174,000m³ Flex Volunteer carrier today from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) — around five weeks ahead of schedule.

The carrier — which does not have a term-charter agreement — had been expected for delivery in late February, but Flex LNG brought forward the delivery because of high prompt spot charter rates, the firm noted earlier this month. The owner also brought forward the delivery of its 173,400m³ Flex Freedom from Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) from mid-January to the start of the month. The DSME-built carrier was one of three Flex LNG newbuild vessels to face delayed delivery in 2020, and was initially expected in November.

Flex LNG has just one newbuild carrier left on its orderbook — the 174,000m³ Flex Vigilant — which is scheduled for delivery from HSHI in May.

The Flex Volunteer is the ninth LNG carrier to join the global fleet this year, as high prompt rates have spurred owners to bring their vessels to market as soon as possible, with backwardation in forward rates through to the summer. A further 11 carriers are slated for delivery this quarter, up from just four a year earlier.
