Japanese LPG supplier Nippon Gas (Nichigas) expects its LPG sales to rise in the April 2021 to March 2022 fiscal year because of stronger demand amid a recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nichigas, a major LPG supplier in the eastern Kanto area, foresees a 2.9pc year-on-year rise in its total LPG sales to 320,000t in 2021-22. The firm expects its household supply to increase by 2.6pc over the period to 199,000t. Nichigas also sees shipments to commercial sector rising by 3.4pc to 121,000t, after sales in 2020-21 were hit by lower demand from restaurants, shopping malls and plants because of the Covid-19 state of emergency and economic downturn.
Nichigas' LPG deliveries edged higher by 0.3pc on the year to 311,000t in 2020-21, as a rise in household sales offset weaker commercial demand. Supply to the household sector rose by 7.2pc to 194,000t because of higher heating demand as people spent more time at home. But sales to the commercial sector dropped by 9.3pc to 117,000t.
Fellow LPG supplier Itochu Enex's sales totalled 500,000t during 2020-21, down by 7.9pc from 2019-20 as weaker commercial, industrial and autogas consumption outweighed higher household use.
LPG demand in Japan fell by 8.6pc to 11.7mn t during April 2020-February 2021 from the same period a year earlier, according to the latest data from the Japan LPG association. Consumption declined in all sectors, including a 1.6pc fall in household and commercial use to 6.4mn t and a 5.5pc decline in industrial demand to 2.4mn t.
