Japanese petrochemical producer Mitsui Chemicals has signed a deal to buy bio-naphtha from Finnish biofuels producer Neste and Japanese trading house Toyota Tsusho, as part of its efforts to meet its 2050 decarbonisation goal.

Mitsui Chemicals aims to receive around 10,000t of bio-naphtha during October 2021-March 2022 at its ethylene cracker in west Japan's Osaka prefecture to produce bio-petrochemical products including ethylene, propylene, benzene, polyolefins and phenol. The company plans to combine bio-naphtha with conventional naphtha to manufacture the products. The Osaka cracker consumes 1.5mn t/yr of naphtha.

Mitsui Chemicals and Toyota Tsusho are planning to acquire International Sustainability and Carbon Certification for their products manufactured from bio-naphtha.

Japanese companies have accelerated their efforts toward the 2050 decarbonisation target. Domestic synthetic rubber producers Yokohama Rubber and Zeon along with the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research have created technology to generate butadiene from biomass feedstock.
