California-based biomass plant owner and operator Greenleaf Power (GP) has obtained $36.7mn in project financing to recapitalise two of its biomass plants and develop battery storage facilities.

The financing, provided by California's East West Bank, will be used to recapitalise GP's 30MW Honey Lake Power (HLP) project in Lassen County, California, and its 22MW St-Felicien Cogeneration (SFC) project in Quebec, Canada.

Power generation from the HLP and SFC plants are sold under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) to San Diego Gas and Electric and Hydro-Quebec, respectively.

In addition to biomass projects, GP will also develop battery storage adjacent to both biomass-fired plants to increase the supply of renewable power during peak periods of demand and improve grid stability, GP said.

GP owns and operates four biomass-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 135MW — three in the US and one in Canada.
