Exxonmobil has signed an initial agreement to participate in the Acorn project's carbon capture plant at the St Fergus gas terminal complex in Scotland.

Acorn carbon capture and storage (CCS) — a venture between UK firms Storegga, Shell and Harbour Energy — is one of the most advanced CCS and hydrogen projects in the UK and is currently in the detailed engineering and design phase.

Acorn aims to be operational by the mid-2020s and would capture 300,000t of CO2/yr in its first phase from gas terminals at St Fergus, which include an ExxonMobil-Shell joint venture processing plant. And it could be scaled up to capture 5mn-10mn t/yr of CO2 by 2030.

ExxonMobil has also joined the Scottish North East Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage Alliance (Neccus), a group of industry, government and academic experts committed to reducing carbon emissions from industrial facilities in Scotland.

"Our membership in Neccus and our involvement with Acorn underscores our commitment to addressing the dual challenge of meeting the world's energy needs while reducing emissions from our operations," ExxonMobil's president of low carbon solutions Joe Blommaert said.
