Russia starts corn harvesting

Russian farmers started to thresh corn in the week ending 1 September, with first cuts indicating yields above the previous year's levels.

Russia's corn yields averaged 4.43t/hectares (ha) on 1 September, up by 0.069t/ha a year earlier for the same harvested area, agriculture ministry data show.

Russian farmers harvested corn from 27,700ha, compared with 16,300 ha a year ago. This takes total corn production for the 2021-22 marketing year to 122,900t, up by 59,500t year on year.

Winter and spring wheat harvested areas reached 22mn ha on 1 September, up from 21.7mn ha last year. The country's overall wheat production now stands at 66mn t this season, down from 73.6mn t at this time last year. Wheat yields averaged 3t/ha, compared with 3.4t/ha in the previous season, and 6pc below the five-year average of 3.19t/ha for the same harvested area.

Some 6.7mn ha of barley has been threshed so far this season, up from 6.6mn ha a year ago. This takes total barley production for the 2021-22 season to 16.4mn t, 2,5mn t below a year earlier.

Russian barley yields fell to an average of 2.45t/ha, compared with 2.61t/ha in the previous season for the equal harvested area, and down by 6pc from the five-year average.

As for oilseeds, winter and spring rapeseed has been harvested from 648,000ha, up by 121,200ha from a year ago. Overall rapeseed production has now reached 1.29mn t, up by about 900,000t from the same time last year.

Russian farmers harvested sunflower seeds from 185,900ha, with production now reaching 268,000t. Russian sunflower seed yields averaged 1.44t/ha, almost in line with the previous year's level for the equal harvested area, but down by 0.56t/ha from the five-year average.

Meanwhile, soybean was threshed from 51,900ha, down from 99,700ha a year ago. Soybean production has now reached 82,000t, down by 89,500t from the same time last year.

Total harvested area for grains and oilseeds reached 33.4mn ha on 1 September, up from 32.4mn ha last year, while overall 2021-22 crop production amounted to 90.9mn t, down from 101.3mn t a year earlier.
