Singapore's quarantine-free air travel lanes with Germany and Brunei come into effect tomorrow, even as the city-state tightens its own Covid-19 measures to fight a spike in infections.
The country is due to welcome tomorrow on a designated flight arriving from Germany the first batch of vaccinated travellers that do not have to serve quarantine. Similar travellers from Brunei are expected to arrive on 9 September. Fully vaccinated Singapore residents will also be able to travel to Germany without serving quarantine.
Such arrangements are part of the city-state's plans to ease border restrictions and boost travel to the country. Singapore is differentiating its border measures according to the destination country's vaccination rates and pandemic control capabilities.
But a rebound in travel activity to Singapore's Changi Airport remains precarious, with the pandemic evolving domestically and globally. The city-state has been battling another wave of Covid-19 infections since late July. New daily Covid-19 cases have hovered above or around 200 this week, prompting the government to announce another series of measures yesterday relating to the enhanced testing of front-line workers and social gatherings. Government officials had also warned of the possibility of another lockdown or limited lockdown if critical cases rise sharply.
Officials had earlier said that they were planning for the possibility of Covid-19 to be endemic in the city-state. But this approach was not welcomed by other territories. Hong Kong had scrapped a long-delayed [travel bubble plan] (https://direct.argusmedia.com/newsandanalysis/article/2215587) with Singapore, as its zero-infection approach clashed with the city-state's plans.
Singapore's border rules are also being continuously reviewed and changed. Singapore announced it will enforce stricter pre-departure test requirements for inbound travelers from selected countries from 9 September. It now requires travellers to present a negative pre-departure Covid-19 test result within 48 hours prior to their departure for Singapore, which was previously 72 hours.
