UK offshore wind farm advances expansion plan

The under-construction Seagreen offshore wind farm has been granted consent for the elements required to add an additional grid connection and increase its capacity to 1.5GW from 1.1GW.

Seagreen has consent to install 150 turbines, each with a capacity of 10MW, in a region of the outer Firth of Forth. But its grid connection agreement only covers 114 turbines through its initial link to the grid at Tealing, Angus. The developers, SSE and TotalEnergies, have therefore been looking to add a second grid connection further south at Cockenzie in East Lothian.

The Scottish government has now consented the marine license application for the offshore elements of the second export cable. The East Lothian council also granted "planning permission in principle" for the onshore elements in August.

The developers planto hold a public consultation on the onshore sections required for the second link next year.

The first turbine was installed at Seagreen last week, with first power expected early next year and commercial operation of the initial 1.1GW to begin in 2023.
