Japanese utility Kyushu Electric Power and gas retailer Saibu Gas have firmed up plans to jointly build a combined-cycle gas-turbine (CCGT) power plant at Hibikinada in the country's southern Fukuoka prefecture.

The companies aim to start construction of the 620MW CCGT unit in January 2023 and begin commercial operations by the end of March 2026. The plant is designed to have a thermal efficiency of around 64pc and is ready to use carbon-free generation fuels such as hydrogen.

Kyushu and Saibu Gas plan to establish a joint-venture company to develop the project next year.

Saibu Gas previously hinted that LNG supplies may come from the Hibiki LNG terminal located next to the planned power plant. Saibu Gas imports around 700,000 t/yr of LNG at the Hibiki LNG terminal.
