European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Australian hydrogen company Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) have formed an alliance to study the development of aircraft powered by hydrogen from renewable sources, or green hydrogen, by 2035.

Airbus and FFI — the sustainable energy arm of Australian miner Fortescue Metals Group — have signed an initial agreement at Airbus' headquarters in Toulouse, France to collaborate closely to implement green hydrogen as a fuel within the aviation industry, FFI said.

The two companies will look specifically at challenges around green hydrogen regulations, infrastructure, and global supply chains, from the production of green hydrogen to its delivery to airports and transfer onto aircraft, the Australian firm said.

FFI will provide the cost outlook and technology drivers on the various elements of the supply chain, and will build infrastructure deployment scenarios for the supply of green hydrogen to targeted airports. Airbus will provide data on fleet energy usage, scenarios for hydrogen demand in aviation, refuelling specifications, and aviation regulatory framework.

"Airbus has identified green hydrogen as the most promising option for decarbonisation to meet our environmental challenges," Airbus vice president of zero emissions aircraft Glenn Llewellyn said.

This is not the first time either firm has formed a partnership to study hydrogen-fuelled aircraft. FFI had launched a study into the supply of green hydrogen for the aviation sector in November through an agreement with US-based hydrogen technology start-up Universal Hydrogen. And Airbus had teamed up with Air New Zealand in September to study the viability of flying zero-emissions hydrogen aircraft in New Zealand.
