Low-cost European airline Ryanair plans to fuel one third of its annual flights from Amsterdam Schiphol airport with 40pc sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to be supplied by Finland's Neste.

The agreement between the two firms starts this month. Ryanair flies around 1,500 flights a year from Amsterdam, meaning around 500 flights a year will be powered by 40pc SAF.

Ryanair plans to fuel 12.5pc of its flights with SAF by 2030. Neste is Europe's largest SAF supplier, producing 100,000 t/yr at its Porvoo refinery in Finland from 100pc renewable waste and residue raw materials. It is targeting a further 450,000 t/yr of production at its Rotterdam plant from 2023.

The EU has proposed a SAF blending mandate, that would apply to fuel suppliers. Aircraft landing at EU airports would be required to use blended jet fuel with a mandated SAF share of 2pc by 2025, 5pc by 2030, 20pc by 2035, 32pc by 2040 and 63pc by 2050.
