Jera, Thailand's Egco to team up on H2, ammonia, LNG

  • Market: Electricity, Fertilizers, Hydrogen, Natural gas
  • 26/04/22

Japanese LNG importer Jera has signed an initial agreement with Thai power producer Egco to collaborate on developing a LNG supply chain, in addition to a large-scale supply chain for hydrogen and ammonia in Thailand.

The southeast Asian country is facing challenges to ensure energy security and decarbonisation, in order to support its economic growth. Jera expects LNG demand in Thailand to grow further. Gas-fired power generation is likely to become increasingly necessary as a backup power supply, as the country switches to renewable outputs, which is subject to weather conditions. Using hydrogen and ammonia as fuel will significantly support the country's carbon-neutral approach, Jera said.

Jera holds around a 12pc stake in Egco through its 50pc-owned subsidiary Tepdia Generating.

Japanese utility Kyushu Electric Power and trading house Mitsubishi each hold a 25pc stake in Tepdia, meaning each firm owns around a 6pc stake in Egco.
