Finnish shipping company ESL Shipping will become the first company to take on the low carbon bunker fuel produced in partnership by Neste and Nordic Marine Oil.
The 0.1pc sulphur fuel is manufactured through co-processing renewable feedstocks with fossil raw materials in a conventional refining process at Neste's refinery in Porvoo, Finland. The drop in fuel, which does not require fleet modification, is ISO 8217 compliant and has International Sustainability and Carbon Certifications (ISCC PLUS) status.
According to Neste, using the fuel can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80pc on a well-to-wake basis compared with conventional fossil fuels.
Although the fuel is in its pilot phase, it is due to be supplied by Nordic Marine Oil at key Danish ports this year.
