Japanese engineering firm Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and US manufacturer Boeing will cooperate to achieve carbon neutrality in the airline sector by 2050.

The companies signed an agreement on 19 July to jointly study carbon-neutral projects, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen, carbon capture and new aircraft design concepts. The concrete plan and roles of each company will be discussed in the study, MHI said.

MHI and Boeing see SAF as one of the most effective measures to achieve carbon neutrality in the aviation sector, aiming to explore solutions to bring down the higher cost of SAF compared with conventional jet fuel, as well as secure raw materials.
