China’s Sinopec cuts H2 refuelling capacity target

Chinese state-controlled oil refiner Sinopec has downgraded its 2025 hydrogen refuelling capacity target to 120,000 t/yr from the 200,000 t/yr set a year ago.

The company is targeting development in two key areas of the sector — hydrogen transport and green hydrogen production. Sinopec did not expand on why it had lowered its refuelling capacity target from last year. But senior vice-president Ling Yiqun said last week that the firm had "refined" its hydrogen plan based on China's national plan, which also focuses on green hydrogen in the transport sector.

Beijing set a target of expanding its hydrogen refuelling network to support 50,000 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles on its roads by 2025 in its hydrogen development plan released in March. It did not specify how many refuelling stations it envisioned needing to meet this on-road demand.

Sinopec has so far built 83 hydrogen refuelling stations and is busy constructing 13 more, according to Ling. But this is still a long way off its target of 1,000 such stations by 2025.
