Australia's Gladstone Sept coal exports at 5-year low

Thermal and metallurgical coal exports from Australia's 102mn t/yr Gladstone port fell to their lowest level in over five years in September because of weak Indian demand and operational issues related to wet weather, Covid-19 absenteeism and mine plan changes.

Gladstone shipped 4.33mn t of coal in September, down from an already depressed 4.91mn t in August and 5.25mn t in September 2021, according to Gladstone Ports (GPC) data. This was the least shipped from the port in a month since April 2017 when Cyclone Debbie disrupted operations.

The port could catch up on some shipments in October, with 31 vessels queued off the port on 6 October, down from 32 vessels a month ago but above the average of around 20. But an earlier-than-average start to the wet season in Queensland is continuing to disrupt mine operations, with a wet start to October following above-average rainfall in September and more wet weather forecast for the remainder of 2022.

Gladstone's January-September shipments were 11.4pc behind where they were in the same period last year and 15.4pc behind January-September 2019. Queensland shipments are heading toward an annual low not seen since 2013, as the fall at Gladstone is matched by low coal shipments from other key ports in the state.

Shipments to India are down by more than a third year to date compared with a year earlier, as Russian exporters increase market share. India overtook Japan as the biggest buyer of coal from Gladstone in 2019 and 2020. It slipped slightly behind in 2021 because of increased Japanese buying. But this was only marginal compared with the fall this year, with Gladstone shipping 9.2mn t to India during January-September and 15.46mn t to Japan.

Gladstone did not ship to Poland in August-September after three straight months of shipments, although it did ship 75,000t to France and 40,000t to Turkey in September. Australia is increasing coal exports to Europe in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Argus last assessed high-grade 6,000 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at $411.87/t fob Newcastle on 30 September, down from a peak of $444.59/t fob on 9 September but up from $383.82/t on 1 July. It assessed the premium hard low-volatile metallurgical coal price at $273.25/t fob Australia on 5 October, up from $203/t on 5 August but down from $664/t on 15 March.
