Japanese engineering firm IHI and Dubai's state-owned Enoc will explore producing green ammonia from solar power, targeting a 200,000 t/yr capacity with commercial operations starting in 2028.
IHI and Enoc on 9 November signed an agreement to jointly study green ammonia output at existing oil terminals owned by Enoc's subsidiary Horizon Terminals that are located in Dubai or neighbouring emirates in the UAE. The companies plan to start operating the pilot plant in 2025, after finalising a feasibility study by the end of February 2023.
The terminal has LPG tanks that can be repurposed to export ammonia to Asian countries including Japan and to distribute to domestic consumers. The green ammonia is expected to be used for power generation, as a marine fuel, and as raw materials for fertilizers, which could reduce CO2. The agreement also includes an aim to establish low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia supply chains in the UAE.
"This partnership aligns with Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 to meet the country's economic requirements and environmental goals," Eneos added. "Further, it supports the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, a national drive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050."
