South Korean chemical firm LG Chem has signed an initial agreement with the US state of Tennessee to invest $3bn in building what it describes as the largest battery cathode manufacturing facility in the country.

The plant in Clarksville, Tennessee will produce nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminium (NMCA) cathode materials for next-generation electric vehicle (EVs) batteries that have higher capacity and more stable performance.

LG Chem will start building the plant in the first quarter of 2023 and aims to launch commercial production by the end of 2025, expanding its output capacity to 120,000 t/yr by 2027 by installing additional production lines. The capacity can supply up to 1.2mn high-performance EVs, LG Chem said on 22 November.

The plant is to completely operate on renewable energy and smart technologies for a more sustainable and efficient production process. LG Chem said that the plant will not only help it meet rising demand for battery cathodes from the EV sector, but address regulatory-related supply risks such as the Inflation Reduction Act in the US.

LG's EV battery production arm LG Energy Solutions last week signed a long-term supply agreement with a US lithium producer for lithium carbonate supply for the same reasons.

Fellow battery manufacturer Posco Chemical has also finished building what it describes as the world's largest single production facility for battery cathodes in Gwangyang city, South Korea.

Argus Consulting forecasts global demand for lithium-ion batteries will rise to 4.1TWh by 2032 on the back of a strong Chinese and European EV performance, with NCM, NMCA and NCA cathodes expected to take up the second-largest share of the demand after lithium iron phosphate.
