Spanish refiner and biofuels producer Repsol has announced an agreement with the country's largest agricultural association ASAJA, aimed at production of advanced biofuels and circular petrochemicals from livestock and agricultural waste and by-products.
Repsol and ASAJA will co-operate to improve the management of livestock and agricultural waste by-products in Spain's rural areas, and Repsol will research the potential of over 40 types of these feedstocks for production of advanced biofuels and fertilisers.
Repsol aims to produce 2mn t/yr of advanced biofuels from feedstocks included in Annex IX Part A and B of the of the EU's recast Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) by 2030. The company intends to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Construction of Repsol's Cartagena advanced biofuels plant in southern Spain is set to be completed in the second half of 2023, and will produce up to 250,000 t/yr of biofuels for the transport sector.
