European LNG sendout figure amended to 4.72TWh/d from 4.59TWh/d
The Netherlands' TTF gas contract for front-month delivery moved below €50/MWh in February for the first time in nearly a year and a half.
Argus assessed the TTF front-month price at €48.25/MWh on 17 February, the first time it had fallen below €50/MWh since 1 September 2021. The assessment edged up above €50/MWh on 23-24 Feburary but dropped below once more, and the contract expired at €46.25/MWh on 28 February — down from the January expiration of €57.30/MWh.
European gas hub prices have fallen steadily in recent months. A largely mild winter has cut into heating demand, while high prices have prompted households, industry and the power sector to cut consumption. This has weighed on storage withdrawals, eroding concerns about a possible shortage this winter even as Russian flows to Europe have been particularly low.
Alongside slimmer demand this winter, strong supply bolstered by firm LNG deliveries has enabled firms to preserve stocks. EU gas storage inventories stood at 62pc of capacity on the morning of 27 February, well above previous years.
The TTF front-month contract was last at about €50/MWh in August 2021, at about the time of a fire at Russia's Novy Urengoi condensate processing plant. Russian exports to Europe slowed after the fire, which cut into European storage injections and raised concerns that Russian pipeline exports to Europe would remain low the following winter. European gas prices are back to about the level they were in late summer 2021, but are still high in historical terms. The TTF front-month price closed at €15.70/MWh at the end of February 2021.
