Japan's Jera shuts Shin-Nagoya gas-fired unit on fire

Japan's largest power producer by capacity Jera was forced to close the 400MW Shin-Nagoya No.8-1 gas-fired generation unit because of a fire.

The fire occurred at equipment used to generate the electromagnetic force required for the No.8-1 generator, and shut down the unit at Shin-Nagoya in central Japan's Chubu area on 1 April. Jera confirmed the fire was fully extinguished on the same day. But it is still unclear when the unit will be brought back on line.

Jera expects that the unexpected shutdown will not adversely affect the power supply balance in the Chubu region, as the region will be able to secure sufficient electricity supplies from other power units. Seasonal falls in electricity demand will also help allow the area to remain amply supplied.

The Chubu area had a 23.41pc surplus in electricity supplies for 14:00-14:30 Japan time (5:00-5:30 GMT) on 3 April, according to Japan's power transmission operator the Organization for Cross-regional Co-ordination of Transmission Operators (Occto). The ratio is predicted to mostly stay above 20pc, even after solar power output drops to zero following a sunset.
