Japanese imports of iron ore in April fell from a year earlier, as the country's crude steel production remained low.

Japan imported around 8.2mn t of iron ore in April, down by 19pc from a year earlier, according to preliminary data released by the country's finance ministry on 18 May. This was also down by 5pc from March when imports rose on the year for the first time since May 2022.

Japan's iron ore imports cost an average of $102.89/t for April, down by 16pc from a year earlier. Average yen-denominated import costs were ¥13,600/t, down by 10pc on the year.

Japanese crude steel output in March fell by 6pc from a year earlier to 7.5mn t, marking the 15th consecutive year-on-year decline, according to the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. The trade and industry ministry had forecast a continued drop in crude steel production for April-June on the back of weaker demand for special steel. This could weigh on demand for iron ore imports over the next few months.
