Multinational agriculture conglomerate Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) plans to expand its refining complex in Lampung, Indonesia, to add glycerine capacity and edible oil packaging.
The new facilities will produce US Pharmacopeia (USP)-grade glycerine and will offer various food-grade packaging options. LDC's head of south and southeast Asia Rubens Marques said this is a response to "evolving market and consumer trends, including growing demand for healthy, plant-based foods and ingredients."
The announcement is in line with market expectations of Indonesia considerably increasing its glycerine production, after it announced a 35pc (B35) blend rate for biodiesel earlier this year. Crude glycerine is a byproduct in the biodiesel manufacturing process. The ratio of crude glycerine to biodiesel is 1:10, for every 10kg of biodiesel produced 1kg of crude glycerine is also produced.
The development of LDC's new facilities in Lampung will complement its existing glycerine refining assets in Claypool, Indiana, and in Wittenberg, Germany. LDC aims to complete its glycerine offering to cover all major feedstocks, in line with customer formulation and label requirements, the group said.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, it said.
